THE ISLAND IS WAITING
Driving around the isla Ibiza

Lets visit Santa Gertrudis
Santa Gertrudis

Santa Gertrudis de Fruitera, better known as Santa Gertrudis, is a small and charming village in the municipality of Santa Eulalia. Santa Gertrudis is located in the geographical heart of Ibiza and this makes it the ideal destination to visit or to spend the night during your stay in Ibiza.
At once traditional and cosmopolitan, Santa Gertrudis is one of the most popular areas for young families, groups and couples holidaying in Ibiza. Surrounded by lush countryside – complete with farm animals and orchards – and boasting easy access to anywhere on the island, the buzzing, pedestrianised centre maintains its Ibicenco heart.

The church 'Església de Santa Gertrudis de Fruitera' is located in the center of Santa Gertrudis and was built in the 18th century. In front of this is the square 'Plaça de L'Església' where you can find many restaurants and bars. Here you will also find the statue of the first bishop of Ibiza: Manuel Abad y Lasierra.

There are also plenty of nice shops and boutiques here to visit. You will not easily find famous fashion brands here, but typical Ibizan clothing. However, you don't just come to the village for clothes. There are many shops with the best cheeses, Spanish sausages, fresh fruit and the tastiest wines. The outer streets contain beautiful villas and contemporary apartments while the surrounding campo is dotted with farmhouses and luxurious modern villas.

We actually think this is one of the most beautiful villages in Ibiza. It has an active local community and the local primary school is known for its modern education. It is therefore a place where many international residents send their children to school. It is therefore not surprising that many mainly Dutch and English people live around Santa Gertrudis. Besides being a cozy village, the area is really beautiful, quiet, and you are actually the most centrally located on the island. Beautiful old fincas have been transformed into wonderful places. But just like the village itself, most residents also respect the old, and the original buildings have been preserved. A nice mix of new and old, with respect for the past.

In the countryside surrounding the village, you’ll find bike trails and hiking paths perfect for island exploration. Yoga and Pilates studios complement the conscious vibes of the village and there are no shortage of shopping hotspots, ranging from fashion and homewares – be sure to pass by the whimsical La Galeria Elefante for one-of-a-kind retail therapy, SLUIZ for quirky and eclectic decor. And not forget the finca-style building of Es Cucons.
Santa Gertrudis is hip and happening and you shouldn't miss it when you are in Ibiza.
Despite the rather limited size, there are plenty of hotspots here that you shouldn't miss!

A snack and drink
Bar Costa
The famous bar of Santa Gertrudis because of delicious snacks of cured ham and an impressive collection of paintings inside.

Most probable, this is the best known sandwich bar in Ibiza. To have a cured ham ‘bocadillo’ in the terrace, in front of the village church, is already a classical. Long ago it used to be the “local” bar, opened only on weekends and on rainy days, when farmers didn’t work. Vicent Roig triggered it to the fame in the seventies(hippie periode), when he began exchanging drinks and food for paintings of the newly settled artists. He started a collection that now hangs on the walls of the various rooms in the bar. It is worth stopping by and also see the giant paintings on the walls.

The Bar Costa is located in the center of Santa Gertrudis, opposite the church, on the right side of the street.
Plaça de l’Esglèsia
07819 Santa Gertrudis
Bar es Cantó
Bar es Cantó is the terrace that you will find immediately in front of the church. Here you can enjoy a refreshing drink while you have a view of the pleasant square Plaça d'Església and of course the church.

Crab A Bite
On and around the Placa d’Església you will find all kinds of nice restaurants where you can enjoy a bite to eat.
Finca La Plaza
Since the spring of 2018, this beautiful village has gained another asset: Finca La Plaza. This legendary restaurant had been around for years, practically an institution on the island and much loved by the locals. It reopened in April 2018 after a major makeover by the new owners, who also own the Mikasa boutique hotel and Beachouse in Playa den Bossa. I was very curious about this new address in the heart of Santa Gertrudis, and honestly, it far exceeded my expectations!

Set back off the buzzing, main square, Finca La Plaza is signposted by a rustic, wooden gate that’s shrouded by the glow of twinkling fireflies. Step through it and you’re met with a world of hopeless romanticism – an alfresco terrace shaded by palm trees, globe lights strung loosely between them, and the sweet sounds of jazz floating over the airwaves. Inside the main restaurant, the interior immediately charmed me with those typical whitewashed walls, wooden elements and bohemian accessories. Elegant and stylish, with a touch of industrial, cozy corners and boho terraces, chill-out areas and lush, green plants – a stylish space that’s been restored to its beautiful former glory by Boho chic interior designers.

In keeping with this relaxd vibe, the menu has been designed to offer something to suit all appetites and dietary requirements. Falling under the guidance of head chef Antonio Laruso, every dish is imbued with the flavours and senses of the Mediterranean. From Italian and Spanish to French, each plate sings with the sunshine synonymous with the region. The ingredients have been selected with care and preferably come from local growers, seasonally and organically produced, we were told.

Take the ‘para picar’ menu, for example, which features small bites designed. Snack on a selection of homemade croquettes, grilled artichoke with lemon, spinach, mint and rosemary, or sautéed baby squid. Starters too, are equally as delectable. Choose from green herbs and crunchy salad – all organic and grown locally, of course – and succulent, organic chicken salad served with potato, red onion confit, avocado and rosemary, soft boiled organic egg served alongside grilled chorizo, endive, and balsamic vinegar, or the intriguing Ibizan red prawn tartare with lemon and scent of lavender. This is first-class food but without the stuffy atmosphere – here, the primary concern is enjoying the plate of food you’re presented with. Substance is rated as highly as style.

This ethos is visible across the entire menu, and quality can be assured thanks to the inclusion of a world-class Josper oven in the kitchen. A must-have piece of equipment for all world-class chefs, the Josper oven infuses any ingredient placed within its charcoal-heated walls with a smoky flavour. We opted for barbecue favourites like corn-fed baby chicken, the matured Galician T-bone steak and the Angus steak – a La Plaza special. All this while enjoying a delicios cocktail with gin, mango and lime. And for dessert a delicios one silky smooth, chocolatey Gianduja, served alongside hazelnut ice cream.

For those looking to expend the experience at Finca La Plaza, the aforementioned dedicated cocktail bar in the garden – a rarity in the village – provides all the liquid reason you need to stay late, and those not looking to dine are also encouraged to stop by to satiate their alcoholic kicks. While all this sounds like a foodie’s delight – and it is – families should note that Finca La Plaza has an early opening time and that means absolutely everyone is welcome. Bring the kids (if you’re quick enough to catch them on their adventures in the square), have an early dinner, or go Mediterranean and dine long into the night. Anything goes here, as long as it’s based in the simple pleasures of quality food and drink and great company in a laid-back setting.
To conclude, we are offered a chupito of their own, home-made hierbas: well, even more than one, because we just get the bottle on the table. All served with a smile and a - very friendly - word of explanation. Finca La Plaza is one of the new culinary highlights of Santa Gertrudis: the setting, food and service are all right here. A fantastic address for foodies and romantic souls ... I will definitely come back for that beautiful inner terrace - and delicious food - recommended!

Bottega ll buca
Santa Gertrudis eatery Bottega ll is open throughout the holidays with a series of festive feasts and a cornucopia of culinary -inspired gifts.
The name partially gives it away already: Bottega il Buco has some Italian blood in its veins.
From the outside, the rustic chic restaurant appears like a casual café; a laidback focacceria where one might catch up with friends; a place to pop in after the morning school run or to grab an after work aperitivo. Indeed, it is all these things. But Bottega ll is so much more

how the restaurant is known among its regulars – is the first European outpost of il Buco, the renown Manhattan eatery that was ahead of its time when it proposed rustic chic dining back in 1994. A creature of long-time entrepreneur Donna Lennard and her Italian partner Alberto Avalle, il Buco helped to spread from NoHo to the whole city the culture of high quality yet simple food served in a homely albeit sophisticated environment. And as it reached its silver anniversary, it was almost natural for il Buco to land in Ibiza. After all, this is the island where simplicity meets beauty, and where international flavours blend effortlessly with the roots of tradition.

Bottega’s location in Ibiza is not just any location. The restaurant and its terrace watch over the village of Santa Gertrudis, considered the culinary centre and authentic heart of the island. Here the community leaves a boho lifestyle full of all the comforts of modernity; international families gather with friends all year long and let their children roam free around the neat and cozy streets and parks. With such an atmosphere full of joyful reminiscence of less stressful times, it’s no wonder that the Bottega has quickly become a local favourite. It’s relaxed and welcoming vibes invite you in for a snack and have you stay for endless chats in front of crisp focaccia and tempting Gin and Tonics.

When people hear Il Buco, they’re expecting something original and delicious, something local or very carefully sourced” explains Donna of the concept.
“The idea was that we could have the background of this beautiful focacceria, but make it a multi-purpose space with all these other wonderful things going on like delectable bites, a beautiful wine list and the Alimentari.” It’s like a gourmet gift that keeps on giving.Bread-making is what probably defines Bottega’s identity best, with its philosophy transpiring in every other dish on the menu. All the ingredients – in the focaccia’s case, ancient organic Triticum durum grain sourced in Caltanisetta, Sicily pass through an attentive process that requires mindful research and skilful handling. The timings of the raw materials are respected: long hours of levitation for the bread, slow cooking techniques applied to the meat, and immense respect for the fruit and vegetables sourced from local farmers.

Speaking of gifts, ‘tis the season to be giving and Bottega IL buca is open throughout the holidays, making it the perfect place to get together .It goes without saying that the menu changes according to the season, and the creativity of the pairings varies with it. The base is that of authentic Italian cuisine, led by an evergreen such as the Paccheri all’Amatriciana with guanciale and Pecorino Romano. Yet, the ingredients are continuously reassembled with a twist that makes everybody from every corner of the world feel at home. This way, you may end up tasting a sea bass ceviche of Peruvian memory next to a selection of thoroughly Spanish charcuterie; a beetroot tartare with green apples that could turn pale the most uncompromising vegan restaurant; and a slow-cooked lamb shoulder with wild fennel that could make you travel in time to the house of your nonna, full of love and hearty food.

Diners are also welcomed to choose their favourite tinned goods from the Alimentari and eat-in the stylish restaurant surrounds; alternatively opt for a selection of the impressive salumi and cheese – hand-picked by Avalle himself. Paleta Ibérica, Mortadella, Salame Milano, Prosciutto and more tempt and tease alongside premium grade Pecorino Reserva, Salva Cremasco, Castelmagno, Fiore di Latte and other slabs of formaggi goodness – it’s the pick and mix of your epicurean dreams. It’s very easy to get carried away with all the heady home-cooking scents coming from the Bottega Il Buco kitchen and the dazzling display of the Alimentari, but a word to the wise: save room for dessert – you won’t regret it.

But the star of it all remains the focaccia. The toppings vary according to the season and to the chef’s and staff’s imagination. From the sweetest squash to the tastiest anchovies, from the never-out-of-fashion fresh tomato with mozzarella to the captivating cream cheese and mortadella. Close your eyes, bite in, and let your brain explode with this kaleidoscope on delicious sensations.

In such a temple of gourmanderie, would you think that the wine pairings are left to chance? Of course not. The wine list is curated by wine director Roberto Paris, also responsible for the cellar at the first il Buco and of its first offspring, il Buco Alimentari & Vineria. The Bottega features more than 90 labels with a penchant for organic and biodynamic catches, and ultimately for the “odd characters”, as Paris likes to call the gems he uncovers around Italy, France and Spain.

The philosophy of the Bottega is not of a one-time dinner that you thoroughly enjoy but never repeat. This is a place where you come with friends the first time, then a second time with your fiancé, then a third time with your parents. And lastly, you may find yourself coming back every time you feel like it. The atmosphere is too familiar and the food variety is too intriguing not to be drawn towards it again and again. That’s what the Alimentari shop inside the restaurant is for: to let you take home some of the delights you have tasted, such as the artisanal olive oil or the salumi and formaggi that make up for a splendid picnic on the beach when accompanied with some freshly-baked bread.

And if you feel like craving a piece of Bottega il Buco right in your home, do not despair: you may shop for il Buco Vita housewares, a collection of simple yet stylish table pieces with delicate colours and a boho vintage touch. They will be like everyday amulets that will forever remind you of those blissful summers in Ibiza.
